Newborn essentials checklist, with real quantities
Most checklists tell you what to buy. This one tells you how many, based on how often you do laundry, plus what changes for a summer or winter baby. Every number comes from the same open rules NestReady uses for your personal list.
Sample answers: first baby due in April in a four-season state, house, standard budget, feeding plan not decided yet.

Skip these
| Crib bumpers | Padded crib bumpers are banned for sale in the US (Safe Sleep for Babies Act, 2022). Keep the crib bare. |
| Sleep positioners and wedges | Not recommended for sleep. Babies sleep on their back on a firm, flat surface. |
| Inclined sleepers | Inclined sleepers are banned for sale in the US (Safe Sleep for Babies Act, 2022). Never let baby sleep at an incline. |
| Quilts, pillows and crib bedding sets | Pretty, but nothing soft belongs in the crib. A fitted sheet is all you need. |
| Weighted sleep sacks | The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against weighted sleep products for babies. |
| Baby shoes | Not needed before walking. Socks and footed sleepers keep feet warm. |
| Lots of newborn-size clothes | Many babies outgrow newborn size within weeks. Your list keeps NB quantities small on purpose. |
| Wipe warmer | Not needed. Room-temperature wipes are fine, and warming them in your hands takes seconds. |
| Decorative diaper stacker | A caddy or a drawer does the same job. |
| Bottle warmer | Optional. A bowl of warm water works; never use a microwave (hot spots). |
| Baby food maker | A fork, blender or food processor you already own does the same job. |
| Bath seat or ring | Bath seats are not safety devices. A small tub and your hand on baby are what keep them safe. |
| Baby powder | Babies can breathe in the powder. Most pediatricians suggest skipping it. |
| Baby walker | The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against baby walkers because of fall and injury risk. |
| Aftermarket car seat inserts | Only use padding and inserts that came with your car seat. Add-ons are not crash-tested with it. |
| Heavy stroller hooks for shopping bags | Heavy bags on the handle can tip a stroller. Use the basket. |
| Matching nursery decor sets | Nice, not needed. Spend on the safety basics first. |
Frequently asked questions
What are the true newborn must-haves?
A safe sleep space with a firm, flat mattress and fitted sheets, an infant car seat, diapers and wipes, a few outfits in newborn and 0–3 month sizes, burp cloths, swaddles, a thermometer and feeding supplies that match your plan.
How does laundry frequency change the list?
It changes everything you wash: bodysuits, sleepers, burp cloths, swaddles and sheets. Washing every 2 days instead of 4 can cut those quantities by a third or more.
Should I buy everything before the baby comes?
Buy the must-haves by about week 36. Wait on things babies have strong opinions about (bouncers, swings, many bottles) and on bigger sizes, which depend on how fast your baby grows.
What baby items can I skip?
Crib bumpers and inclined sleepers (both banned for sale in the US), sleep positioners, wipe warmers, baby shoes before walking, and large stocks of newborn diapers or clothes.
Do twins need double of everything?
Most per-baby items double (car seats, sleep spaces, clothes, burp cloths). Some things do not: one bathtub, one diaper pail, and one double stroller.
